Where do my Mooney ancestors come from???
« on: Wednesday 09 August 17 13:43 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I've been searching for more information about my Irish ancestors for a long time but still can only find him on 2 UK censuses after he immigrated to England and no Irish records :(

He's on the 1861 Census as David Mooney, Born Est: 1818, Residence: Brightside Bierlow, Occupation: Railway Labourer, Place of birth: Ireland

In 1881 it says David Mooney, Born abt: 1816, Residence: Brightside Bierlow, Occupation: General Labourer, Place of Birth: Ireland. but I don't know if this is him or not as the record states he's a widow when I believe his wife to still be alive until 1882.

Additionally, I ordered his marriage certificate from 1837 to Mary Warburton and found his father was called Bernard Mooney but this hasn't yielded any new records either.

Does anyone have access or advice on Irish records or the Mooney family? or know why he only appeared on a census with his family once?

Thanks

Hello

Did he and his wife have any children between 1861-1871?  Then we could look for one or more in 1871 to confirm if David was still alive.

Also you say his wife may have been alive till 1882 - have you found her in 1871?

Were there daughters called Winifred and Esther?

They both married in December 1870 father David a labourer

Address for both girls given as Radcliffe so that might be the area to look for David in 1871.

Hello and welcome

Looking at the children in 1861 they were born Lancashire, Birkenhead and Sheffield.

GRO indexes has Mooney births with mother Warburton
Ann Eliza 1838 Bolton
Winifred 1842 Liverpool
John 1845 Liverpool
Eli 1850 Wirral

This may help the search

Mary is down as married in 1871/1881 but no David.

She is with married daughters in each so we can be confident that is the right family.

No David again but in 1851 Mary and two young children Esther and Eli are with the Ryder family.

Abraham Rider
Hannah Warbutton
marriage 1826 could be the relationship

Mary down as sister in law.

Perhaps David left the family in the 1860s; he may even have assumed another name. Or he may have left even earlier & Theresa not been his...she would have been registered under her mother's married name whatever the situation.

This might be a red herring but there is a Bernard Mooney born 1817 Ballybay Monaghan Ireland with a father Bernard mother Mary.

Don't know if Bernard Mooney was a common Irish name or they could be related.
