Catto Square, Aberdeen, 1841
« on: Wednesday 09 August 17 22:36 BST (UK) »
I have a census transcript from the 1841 census:

http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbc%2f1841%2f0017708818

The location is given as simply "Catto Square, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland", and 34 names are listed, some in family groups.

Is it likely that several dwellings were aggregated together? Or has anyone any information about this location: large boarding house / several flats in one building / an institution of some sort.

Thanks for any hints

Many thanks Monica.

Clearly there were several dwellings, which either the enumerator or transcriber has melded together.

And thanks for the links with lots for further distraction (oops, I mean exploration of course).

More distractions/explorations?

Scottish Post Office Directories  http://www.nls.uk/family-history/directories/post-office

I've had a look at Aberdeen for the period you are interested in - searching for Melvin or Catto Square.

2 George Melvins but not at Catto Sq

Gordon, the Scotlands Places description states that Catto Square was a row of houses (you can see this on the map link). Sometimes the address ref for Catto Square comes up on searches with an actual number (ie house) other times not.

Clearly there were several dwellings, which either the enumerator or transcriber has melded together.
