Birtley Fell hotel 1782
« on: Thursday 10 August 17 07:19 BST (UK) »
Hi there
Seems the area has changed since late 18C but does anyone know of the area and whether there was a hotel? Have an ancestor whose father was noted as hotelkeeper, she was bap in Chester Le  Street but parents from Birtley Fell and he was an hotelkeeper.

The name is Miller but I haven't found anything saying there was even a village there let alone an hotel. Seems the area is a suburb now

Any locals know?
Many thanks
Meegan

Looking for Birtley Fell online the only reference I can see relates to a murder at Birtley Fell https://www.jack-the-ripper-tour.com/generalnews/the-murder-of-jane-beadmore/

The article does mention landmarks including Pelaw main wagonway which is shown on this map.   Could you ancestor have lived on this side of the village and have worked as a hotelier in the village??   On this map there is the Red Lion Hotel  :-\

Thanks for that direction, Kay, and the links. Have found there are at least 4 pubs in the town and it is hard to tell which ones may have been around in the 1780s. There must be a pub history website - I'll do a search on that

I don't know where exactly they lived but will search further
Many thanks
Meegan

Might it be horse keeper? There are several Miller baptisms at Chester Le Street 1776-1782, father Ralph Miller, horse keeper, Birtley Fell.

In your subject line you mention the date 1782.

Are you speaking of the baptism of Elizabeth Miller, daughter of Ralph and Jane, 12 May 1782?
If so, the occupation is Hkeeper, which, as Shaun has already said, is most likely to be H[orse]keeper.

This looks like another to the same couple, Ralph and Jane of Pelton Birtley Fell. His occupation is definitely Horsekeep[er] https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6SHW-3N8?i=142&wc=9K59-6TG%3A13618101%2C16337901%2C16337902&cc=1309819

Agreed.

Hopefully Meegan will let us know if she also agrees  :-\
