Not Cross enough!
« on: Thursday 10 August 17 09:52 BST (UK) »
Short version: where is William Cross b1880 in the 1901 census?

Long version:
I have a family:
Henry Cross (1849-1924)
(wife)Mary Jane Hagger (1857-1939)
with children
Mary Jane (1876-1952)
Henry (1878-?)
William (1880-1958)
Sarah Alice (1883-1964)
Alfred (1885-1899)
All the children were born in Islington.

In 1891 the entire family is at 103, Benwell Rd, Islington.
in 1901:
The parents and Sarah Alice are at 2, Hope St Islington, as is Mary Jane, now married to Joseph Long.
Henry is at 98, Pembroke St, Islington, now married to Lousia Thomas
Alfred is dead.

I cannot find William between 1891 and 1907, when he's resident at 103, Pembroke St, and he gets married to Sarah Barrow. 103, Pembroke St is the home of Henry Cross at the time.

(and, yes, this is very much related to my question about census coverage and transcriptions)

I imagine that in 1901 a 21 year old William has left the family home, and is lodging and working "elsewhere". But I can't find him.

(I have MUCH other data on the family, so this omission is like a hole in a tooth; ANNOYING)

Army service must be a possibility for a 20 year old missing from the census at the time of the Boer War.

Good thought.
But... (something I didn't include in my post) he joined the Army in 15/5/1915 (pre conscription).

His record (only 3 pages) makes no mention of pre 1915 military experience, and he served WW1 (1915-1919) as a private, "packer and loader" in the Army Service Corps, reflecting his trade of "Coal Porter"

That doesn't speak (to me) of an "old Boer War hand".

(I will go and search FindMyPast though, just in case!)

EDIT; had a dental appointment, and the library is close to my dentist AND the have FindMyPast access (which I don't).

Couldn't find "my" William Cross in the Boer war records.

My initial thoughts aren't favourable - this one is born St Lukes (a very specific part of Shoreditch) and he's still in Shoreditch. He's also working in a skilled trade ("my" William Cross is very much a labourer).

But I can't find any more records for this candidate, to confirm/deny him. I'm still looking.

EDIT; I've found a GRO birth, that looks like our metal polisher; DOB and Place are an excellent match.

CROSS, WILLIAM        -
GRO Reference: 1883  M Quarter in SHOREDITCH  Volume 01C  Page 136

Since I also have this GRO birth for "my" William Cross

CROSS, WILLIAM        HAGGER
GRO Reference: 1880  D Quarter in ISLINGTON  Volume 01B  Page 323

I think the metal polisher is a separate induividual.

My search continues.

Well, I don't know what I don't have. :-)

I have 40 cited events against William, including baptism, all census (except 1901), marriage, military service and a good run of electoral register residences, up to his death.

I have 29 cited events against his wife Sarah, similarly.

They are my SO's paternal grandparents.

Interesting that he stated his age as 38. 3 years older than other evidence suggests.

I hadn't spotted that. But it's definitely him - the marriage/children details are a perfect (and multifaceted) match.

But his baptism register entry has a birth date on it, so I'm pretty sure as to his actual DOB too.

(hurriedly looks through pile of records).

Yep, every document EXCEPT the Attestation gives a DOB around 1880.
