George Bissett Kirk *** COMPLETED ***
« on: Thursday 10 August 17 10:55 BST (UK) »
Hi there

I have George Bissett Kirk in the family tree born on 24 August 1903 at 4 Waverley Park, Edinburgh, Scotland.  He emigrated to Canada sailing from Liverpool, England on 2 October 1920 on board the S.S. "Megantic" (White Star Line) and arrived in Québec, Canada on 10 October 1920.

I have also found out that he sailed from Montréal, Québec, Canada on board the S.S. "Carinthia" (Cunard Line) and arrived in Greenock, Scotland on 21 August 1958 - to 2 Chesser Avenue, Edinburgh, Midlothian for a 3 month stay.

His parents were John Kennedy Kirk (1870-1958) and Mary Ann Groundwater (1875-bef. 1958)

Can anyone help fill in the gaps for me from his emigration in 1920 until his death?

Regards

On the 1921 census there is a George B. Kirk listed in Hafford, North Battleford, Saskatchewan. He was 17, single, born in Scotland and his parents born in Scotland. It says he emigrated to Canada in 1920. His occupation was listed as bank clerk. He was a lodger in the household of Cleveland Hess who was a bank manager. There were two other lodgers listed in the household as well who were bank employees.

I have found an obituary for George who died 25 Aug 1975 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It mentions his coming to Canada when he was 17 to work for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Saskatchewan. He transferred to Winnipeg in 1949 and retired in 1962. He was predeceased by his wife, Annie. The obituary also mentions two children (son G.R. of Winnipeg and daughter Mrs. J.H. Ormrod of Ontario) as well as a brother John and sister Margaret Munro in Scotland.

George's wife, Gertrude Annie Kirk died 20 Jul 1971 in WinnipegPenticton, B.C. Her obituary adds a specific town where her daughter was living - Deep River, Ontario. Also mentions Annie had a sister as well as a brother named A.W. Peet of Melville, Saskatchewan.

If you PM me your email address I can send you a copy of the obituaries.

George and Annie are on the 1953, 1957, 1962 and 1963 Canada voters list in Winnipeg. Their daughter M.A. is with them in 1953 and 1957 listed as a stenographer. Their son is with them in 1962 and he's an electrical engineer.

It would appear M.A. married between 1957 and 1961 as their is a birth announcement in the Winnipeg Free Press indicating they had a daughter born in 1961 in Ontario.

Sadly, son George Robert Kirk died 21 Jul 2015 in Winnipeg. Here's a link to his obituary:
