Arms of the MacGregor family
« on: Thursday 10 August 17 12:05 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Would anyone be able to tell me how many coats of arms have been granted to the MacGregor clansmen, to whom and when? Although I understand that I have no right under Scottish law to display a coat of arms (hence why I use the clan crest which is free for use), it would be interesting to see if I am descended from any who where granted arms.

Thanks,

Adam McGregor

PS - Lord Lyon's writ only runs as far as the borders of Scotland. If you are outside Scotland, you may display what you like, but be aware that a coat of arms is a form of identity and if you are usurping someone else's identity, that is punishable throughout the world.

Thanks very much for all of that. Seeing as all of the arms are relatively recent, it looks like I'm not descended from any bearers of arms. Thanks again.

The thing to remember is that the MacGregors had a very turbulent history. There was a time when all MacGregors were attained. It has been recorded that during that time they took other names to stop themselves being killed. These are some of the recorded names they took -

Yes, the McGregors are just one part of my family history that involves persecution. I think that the forced name change has probably restricted my search for my ancestors, seeing as I can only go back as far as 1796.

The name Macgregor being proscribed  it couldn't appear on a legal document i,e a will, a tack or a deed, hence the name-changes. To get round this the clan had a conference whereby they all agreed to take the name Grant in view of the long connection with that clan & a common descent as the Clan Alpin. A Macgregor chieftain would be appointed chief of the whole clan Grant, a cunning stunt which never came to fruition due to the laird of Grant's apoplexy at the very idea. ;D

Skoosh.

If only they had all taken the name Grant - that would have made my research a lot easier!
