According to this parts of the Manchester 1861 Census are missing;

Think its the 1851 - much restoration has been done anyways ....

Good idea but just adds to the mystery or my misery.

Where is he in 1841 and 51? It's making the name change even more of a possibility isn't it?

There's a John White MMN Horbury born M 1853 Huddersfield Union but that could be a different couple.  Never know with this one being all over the country making his bread.

Added - also a John White death S 1853 Huddersfield Union age 4 - maybe months - and it's the same little chap so we will probably never know.

Wow what are the chances of those two surnames being linked to a birth it's got to be the same couple?

It could be because he didn't seem to have any trouble keeping a job over the years.

He was a baker in 1871 and afterwards he worked as a porter in Smithfield market however, when his son Frederick married he said he was a baker yet John had been a porter for years just to add to the confusion.

Have you got a marriage for Margaret?  Just wondering when and where and what father is at that time.  If she puts him as her father that is.

I was also wondering if he was John Charles and added the White or he flipped the names round and he is Charles John but too many permutations to go there.
