Chris

I've looked on Durham records Online (have a sub) - to me it's either a mistranscription from the old way of writing an e - see my post just above yours and/or the way Lerwick was pronounced.

Pesonally,  have no doubt that it was Lerwick. You should see some of the ways that Welsh places and surnames were written in the old days .

You could email them and ask them to double- check the transcription. It is quite likely that the 'e' of Lerwick has been transcribed as an 'o'. I have always found them most helpful.

I remember now that I suggested to you on another (connected) thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=776507.msg6301934#msg6301934

Jen - I emailed them before and they never replied.

Gadget - That's my thinking too. Afterall, it's only ONE LETTER off

Rosinish - That's the biggest problem. I thought Shetland and Orkney were completely different

It's frustrating because you finally find a place-name to find out it's either spelt wrong or doesn't make sense

I'm really very surprised. I have always had prompt and helpful replies.

They have finally replied. Apparently "Larwick" is how the Shetlanders themselves spelt it.

They have also given me new leads to chase. So, quite helpful all in all.
