Yet another mispelling
« on: Friday 11 August 17 11:56 BST (UK) »
Last week I posted a query about someone being listed as native of "Larwick, North Britain"

This time, on another record, he is native of "Lorwick, Orkneys"

Can I be absolutely certain they are talking about LERWICK, SHETLAND? And that's where he was born?

Could you show us what you've seen please?  And tell us where and when it was written?

I've often seen old-style 'e' looking more like a modern 'o'.

Reality is no you can't be absolutely certain  unless you have the birth certificate and/or the baptism record.
People tend to get obsessed by spellings when spelling was not important until very recently and spellings on secondary records are often 'wrong' simply because of accents and being written by others in another area of the country or world

From which record have Durham Records Online transcribed this? What is the name?

You could email them and ask them to double- check the transcription. It is quite likely that the 'e' of Lerwick has been transcribed as an 'o'. I have always found them most helpful.

It's on the link that Ray posted, I think
Ralph Taylor Anderson, bpt 21 Sept 1815 - Robinson's Lane Meeting House, Sunderland.
Transcription only.
Probably mistranscribed from the old way of writing an e   -  ɘ

Forgot to mention - father was 'Andrew Anderson (mariner, native of Larwick, North Britain) '

This is the information I have received.

Baptisms, Sunderland District
Record Number: 739731.0
Location: Sunderland
Church: Robinson's Lane Meeting House
Denomination: Presbyterian (Scotch)
21 Sep 1815 Ralph Taylor Anderson, born 12-Sep 1815, third son of Andrew Anderson (mariner, native of Larwick, North Britain) & Mary Taylor (native of Sunderland)

Baptisms, Sunderland District - Record Number: 739221.0
Location: Sunderland
Church: Robinson's Lane Meeting House
Denomination: Presbyterian (Scotch)
24 Oct 1802 Andrew Peter Anderson, born 4-Oct 1802, second son of Peter Anderson (native of Lowick, Orkneys) & Margaret Taylor (native of Sunderland)

I'm assuming Mary/Margaret are the same and that Andrew/Peter have been mixed up too

Clutching at straws but think I'm on the right track
