Hmm! That's a matter of opinion, I personally prefer Ancestry's search feature especially for censuses. However I use both FindMyPast and Ancestry as each has its strengths.
Keith, don't overlook newspapers as actors would often be mentioned. My public library ticket enables me to access Nineteenth Century British Newspapers, a really useful resource.
Newspapers are also on FindMyPast. I agree both have their own strengths, I switch around depending on who I'm researching, timeframe and place.
