Darowon, Mudgee, NSW
« on: Saturday 12 August 17 08:03 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find out about a property or district called "Darowon" near Mudgee.  It was noted as the place of death in 1880 of Henry Christopher MOIR.  Thank you.  J

The witnesses are John Thomas Moir and William Parker. I don't have the original certificate, but a transcription made from it.  John Thomas MOIR was the eldest son of Henry Christopher MOIR.  Thank you for that Trove entry.   J

Could it have been "Darowen"? (Named after the same place in Wales, perhaps).

A couple of references:

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/904749?searchTerm=Darowen&searchLimits=sortby=dateAsc

It seems to have been somewhere in the Wollar area (so NE-ish of Mudgee), I can't seem to track down a good map of the area at the time, though.

Hmmm, it seems quite possible. I don't have enough information to say yea or nay. There are some clues in the articles so I can start some kind of timeline for Darowon/Darowen and see how it parallels the Moir family's timeline.   J

I've printed off the articles and will see what I can extract from them.

Alternative spelling from a resource:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=678243.0

Barigan
And
Barigan Creek
In the parish of Barigan, in the County of Phillip, in the Land District of Mudgee, in the Pastures Protection district of Mudgee, in the Shire of Cudgegong.

From one of my elderly rellies who still lives in the Pipe Clay area ‘just’ north east of Mudgee, He says …. Probably east of Kains Flat,  or there could be a way through via Botobolar.  .

That's all good, thank you!   Time to look at some maps I think.

What a long way to travel by horse.

Just a bit of extra background:  Henry Christopher MOIR was a convict who arrived on the Albion in 1827.  At the age of 14, (in 1824) he was arrested for picking pockets.  He spent two or three years on the hulks.  Family story passed down said he was first over the mountains - but in fact he was in a chain gang working on the roads.  He was blind in one eye, had scars and tattoos.  His first child (John Thomas MOIR appears to have been named after John THOMAS who was indicted at the same time.  There were other family stories - all rather romanticised - but every story had some kind of link to reality.
