Hello everyone,

Thank you all for all of the information, I need to digest it all before deciding where to go next. It is good to know about the French records, just a shame I cannot read/speak French properly.

I'm still somewhat surprised that British national don't appear to have needed to register births etc with the British Embassy.

Thanks again.

If Ralph BRETT was a farmer or in charge of another big estate around 1840, he lived in the countryside, not in a city like Rouen.

David,

I got Rouen from the 1891 British census.
Presumably régisseur means estate or farm manager, not stage manager as per Google translation?

I know that. It was just my tuppence, trying to explain why you can't find her birth record in  Rouen.

Yes. He was a farm manager.

Alexis YUNG mentions him as a "marchand de bestiaux" as well. A cattle dealer in English  ?

and I am wondering if he was dealing with horses. I guess that's the kind of man a landlord would hire.

the age of Elisa/Eliza on this census fits with the age she gave on her marriage certificate which gives a birth year c 1841
so maybe her birth was 1840/1

In 1846, a Louis BERGER, chevalier de la Légion d'honneur, lived in Loroy. He passed away in Loroy on March 5th 1847. Louis François BERGER, 64 years old, retired captain, chevalier de la Légion d'honneur. He was a native of Paris.

His career history

Distinguished himself at the Battle of Leipzig

I guess that he was renting the castle. After his death, Bernard LUPIN recruited his own staff because the managers aren't the same.

I know it doesn't really help us.

Between Salins and Méru-ès-Bois, Mary HARMETT gave birth to three children. We know that Eliza, circa 1841, and Charles, circa 1845, are born in France. It's probably the same thing for Betsie circa 1843.

Does the death certificate of Charles BRETT in Nantwich in 1891 state his birthplace ?
