1939 register query
« on: Saturday 12 August 17 11:47 BST (UK) »
I looked at the 1939 Register for a close family member, thinking I would confirm what I already knew; imagine my surprise when I saw that her maiden name seemed to be overwritten by her married name, as she didn`t marry until 1941.

What would the reason for that be ?

Records were updated afterwards so single ladies would have their married names added as in your example.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

The Register was continually updated while National Registration was in force, when it was a legal requirement to notify the registration authorities of any change of name or address. This ended in 1952, but since 1948 the Register had also been used by the National Health Service, who continued updating the records until 1991, when paper-based record-keeping was discontinued.

Thank you both for your replies.

However, I thought I'd uncovered another family secret/mystery  !!
