Not quite. You're in S.2.a.6.6. It's the square to the left.

Forgot to mention the main maps are divided into N,S,E & W.
So with 57D there will be a compass point after.

Good point jim, beat me to it.  The additional point is vital.

The S 1 d 7 6 will appear in the SW quarter of all the maps so you need to be sure, if the diary doesn't specify, that you are on the right map, 28 SW in this case.  Here for example is the same partial reference on 57D SW (right over on the left edge: http://digitalarchive.mcmaster.ca/islandora/object/macrepo%3A70679/-/collection

Thank you Jim and Max, for a teacher I am a difficult pupil!

Would the attached (http://digitalarchive.mcmaster.ca/islandora/object/macrepo%3A66941) be correct for N25c?

Nic

Sorry Jim, 1 to the left again?

I was going clockwise abcd rather than ab then below cd.  Should have looked more closely at your instructions again.

just a note to correct Jim on trench map measurements.
The numbered square (18) is 1000yds x 1000yds (not a mile 1760 yds) therefore the lettered squares (ABCD) are 500yd squares therfore each 10th division up or down is 50yds. Useful when measuring distances
