So my Yorks, have lead from Katherine Wright  1749 Yelvertoft  all the way to my 14th gg Henry Wryta  1424 

and after an evening perusing the Net...

I am flying high with the Wright brothers and William the Conqueror..

We shall just have to see... before I totally - fall for this one...

I love this kind of stuff because it's almost always complete rubbish.

Judging by the correspondance of the distribution of the surname to the old danelaw, ie from east anglia through to just south of northumbria, I'd say the smart money is on the surname being of anglo-scandanavian origin rather than norman.

But that's just me.
