Brook Parish Look Up [pre 1620]
« on: Saturday 12 August 17 23:32 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am hoping someone will be able to check the parish registers of Brook for some christenings and marriages for me.

My ancestor John Spillett of Brook died in 1625 and left a Will in which he names his wife, children, brothers, and grandchildren. It would help me if some one could check for these:

Christenings:

Robert Spillett - son of John and Mary
Bridget Spillett - daughter of John and Mary
Grace Spillett - daughter of John and Mary
William Spillett - son of John and Mary
Jane Spillett - daughter of John and Mary
John Spillett - son of John and Mary
Margaret Spillett - daughter of John and Mary

I don't know when the children were born, but Bridget was born c1597 and married Anthony Pym in 1616. Also Robert is described as John's eldest child, and William, Jane, John and Margaret are all described as his "four youngest children". Given that these last four children are described as being under 21 at the time the Will was written (May 1625) I guess that they were probably born between 1590 and 1625. However I may be wrong.

John was probably born in the 1560s or 1570s but this is purely a guess based on the fact that his daughter Bridget was born c1597.

John also mentions two brothers, Edward and Henry, and also Edward's son William. However I have no other info on those.

Lastly if anyone is able to check for John Spillett's marriage?

Many thanks

Matt

Matt,

To start a marriage at Willesborough,

1588 Jan 22 John SPILLETT and Jane SPRATT

Then to Brook and the following baptisms as transcribed and found,

1588 Jul 22 John s John SPILLET
1589 Oct 12 Margaret d John SPILLETT
1590 Dec 20 Elizabeth d John SPILLET
1597 Jul 04 John s John SPILLETT
1598 Oct 22 Bridgett d John SPILLETT
1608 Apr 24 William s John SPILLET
1610 May 06 Jane d John SPILLETT

Then a burial at Brook,

1611 Feb 9 Jane SPILLETT w/o John

Then a marriage at Sutton Valence,

1611 Oct 10 John SPILLET (W and Yeoman) of Brook and Mary RAYNES (W) of Brenzett by Licence

Then back to Brook and more baptisms, again as found and transcribed,

1613 Oct 28 John s/o John SPILLIT
1615 Sep 17 Edward s/o John SPILLITT
1617 May 04 Margaret d/o John SPILLIT

There are further burials at Brook as follows,

1588 Jul 29 John SPILLET s/o John
1597 Jul 5 John SPILLETT s/o John
1615 Dec 30 Edward SPILLET s/o John

There appear to be missing baptisms so, more looking needed.

Tony

Matt,

An update,

The first is confusing and it is a burial I missed at Brook!

1614 Jun 25 Margaret SPILLIT d/o John

I have found two baptisms at Hinxhill as follows,

1600 Aug 22 Robert s/o John SPILLET
1605 Jan 20 John s/o John SPILLET

These look good to fit in with what you already have.

Still no sign of Grace!

Not sure which mother you wish to follow but Mary Spillett (relict of John) married Simon Sab(b) of Goudhurst (by Licence) on 6 Dec 1625 at Brook.  She was buried on 2 April 1635 at Goudhurst.

Hi Tony

Wow! You've been busy, so many many thanks. These all look useful and I think this info will definitely help. I must admit I hadn't given any thought to the possibility that John might have married twice as the only info I had on him was from his Will and a small piece of info from the Will of Anthony Pim.

I'll end there as I've just seen your other posts so I better read them as well.

Many thank again for the help.

Matt

Hi Tony

Many thanks again.

Do you think John was married just twice?

As Bridget is my ancestor I will follow his first marriage to Jane, however it will be useful to get any info on his second wife so thanks for letting me know about her second marriage and her burial. Do you have any idea of when John or either of his wives may have been born?

Anyhow, many thanks again. Now to write these notes up.

Matt

Matt,

All I can find are two baptisms, neither anywhere near Brook.  However, one is more interesting than the other,

at Sutton Valence
1564 Jan 28 John Spyllet

and the other at Bearsted,
1566 Nov 1 John s/o John Spylyt

The one at Sutton Valence is most interesting as, John Spillett 's second marriage took place in that Parish.

There is a Will for a Willam Spillet of Sutton Valence, 1632 held at Canterbury that is worth a look at.

Have not been able to find a brother Henry.  There is an Edward Spillett baptised at Selling to William in 1570.

There are two Spillett Families to be found at Charing, one headed by Edward and the other by Henry.  Edward has a son William there but not Henry!

More grist to the mill,
Tony

Another update,

Burial at Brook as follows,

1609 Mar 29 Margaret SPILLET - Widow of John

Tony

Hi Tony

Thanks for the new info.

I had come across the Will of William Spillet myself and agree it's worth investing. It is possible that this is John's father but that's only a theory based on the fact that they were connected to the same parish. There is also a 1611 Will for Thomas Spillett of East Sutton and a 1636 Will for Francis. Spillett also of East Sutton. I don't know if they are related though.

I'm intrigued by the Will and burial you mentioned for Margaret widow of John (1609). This can't be my John as he was married to Jane (in 1588) then Mary (in 1611) and died in 1625. Could this be his parents?

There is one thing that puzzles me though. On the list you sent me relating to John's marriages and children you have the following

John Spillett married Jane Spratt in 1588

John s of John chr 4 Jun 1597 Brook.
John s of John bur 5 Jun 1597 Brook

Then there is a John s of John chr 20 Jan 1605 in Hinxhill.

Jane was buried 9 Feb 1611 in Brook and John then married Mary Raynes (a widow) in 1611.

They apparently had a son named John in 1613. So did the one born in 1605 die? Is there a burial?

Also I'm puzzled by the burial in 1614 of 'Margaret Spillett d/o John '. John had a daughter Margaret in 1589 but if this is her it seems odd to describe her as 'd/o John' as she would be 25. That Margaret must have died as there is another Margaret in 1617.

I guess the answers to these questions will probably be in the Wills.

By the way I've found a Will for Simon Sabb (1637) but nothing for Mary.

Many thanks again

Matt
