Name of sister?
« on: Sunday 13 August 17 14:19 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm hoping someone can help me here with this extract from the Will of John Spillett of Brook (1625). He seems to mention a sister here but I can't make her name out. It might be Tilden/Tildon but I'm not sure. Also it looks like she is 'of London' but again that's only a guess.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Matt

It's pity that we cannot see more of it to compare more of the letters. Is the sister actually named ??

Item I give to my sister Tilden – eleven
shillings

Is there another known capital T anywhere, for comparison? If it is Tilden, it’ll probably be her husband’s surname. Married female relatives are often referred to that way. There do seem to be plenty of Tilden in Kent.

There is a transcript of a marriage licence showing for a marriage at Canterbury St Mary Bredman which is about 13 miles from Brook.

Date:  5 Nov 1588 between Richard TILDEN and Mary SPILLETT.
Both of the parish of East Sutton and he was a Gent.

From your other post on John Spillett - his second marriage was at Sutton Valance, so East Sutton seems the right area the above pair were residing perhaps.

MARRIAGE:
Luce, Tippett , Thomson, Dolling ~ Devon & Cornwall
Mocquard ~ London, France

The part you think might be "of London" seems unlikely as the next line begins "shillings".  I think it's more likely to be a number, but I can't work out what it is.

MODIFIED - just read the comment by Bookbox - "eleven" it must be.

I can post a larger image if it would help. I only posted this small piece so that it was small enough to upload. I don't think she is mentioned elsewhere in the will so I think this is the only place her name is shown.

Many thanks for that marriage info. It's a shame I don't know (yet) where John or Mary Spillett were from but this gives me somewhere to start looking.
