Thanks for this. I have the Darley Dale Parish Registers but they don't have this entry. Presumably he moved away and only returned for burial. Is Staincliffe Hall in Yorkshire?

I think we have another connection, I noticed Steer in your signature. One of my ancestors was Dorothy Steer (1590-1657) who married Ralf Wilgoose, again in Darley. Does this mean anything to you?

We must be distant cousins through marriage! :) 
Edit:I have now found the inquest in the local paper - He was working for Sir Joseph Whitworth at Stancliffe Hall in Darley digging out earth for a carriage drive!

Hello again

Glad the information was of some use to you.  My Steer family would seem to originate from the Wirksworth area.  My only connection with Darley Dale is through Ann Hogg who was born in Fritchley.  My Derbyshire ancestors appear to originate  from the Crich, South Wingfield, Hognaston area.
