Lost McAllisters 1841 census
« on: Sunday 13 August 17 17:28 BST (UK) »
Need the help of another pair of eyes please!!!!!! I am looking for Donald McAllister(various spellings tried), his wife Catherine and 1 child Mary born ca 1837/38 (she lived to be a witnesses at her brother's marriage in 1861)and possible 2nd child John born ca 1840/41 on the 1841 census.  I have the family on every other census from 1851 but cannot find any that tie in to 1841.  In 1851 the family are in Furnace, in Argyll, 1861 & 1871 in Lochgilphead and 1881 in Renton Dunbartonshire.  None of the children pre 1855 appear in the OPR but I have all the information for the family following Civil Registration, including the deaths of Donald in 1887 and Catherine in 1891 in Renton Dunbartonshire. Any help will be most gratefully received.  isk

Can you tell us where Mary & John were born according to the census' you have please as this is likely where the family were in 1841 & what is Donald's occ?

Were Donald & Catherine both born Scotland from census' & what years were they born?

Are the children listed as dau & son or step children?

Could one or other have been married previously?

Do you have the marriage for Donald & Catherine?

Reason is that I've found a Donald McAllister 19, at Big Kiln, Campbelltown. with him is a 4 year old, Mary Holmes.

Added - I see that Catherine's mn was Stewart.

Thanks Gadget,

Was a bit of a stab in the dark & took a while  :)

I found the Holmes one too which crossed my mind but that was after the initial one & without any other info. decided to wait.

They could have just been missed off the 1841 - I don't see a separate Catherine Stewart either.

Hello All.  Thank you for your responses.  Let me answer them as best I can
According to all the census returns Donald was a tinsmith born in, variously, Campbeltown, Kintyre and Glassary. In 1851 he was 34, in 1861 he was 40, in 1871 he was 53 and in 1881 he was 58. All the children are listed as sons and daughters  Mary & John both born in Campbeltown.  No OPR record for the marriage for Donald McAllister and Catherine Stewart.  From their death certificates the parents are Donald McAllister; Father : Archibald McAllister, Coppersmith, Mother:Mary Millan  Catherine Stewart; Father:Robert Stewart Mother: Mary White.
I am coming round to Gadget's suggestion that they were missed from the 1841 census.  Once again very many thanks for your interest and time.  isk
