The death notice for Alexander Lamont in the Scotsman on 16 September 1914 describes him as "late Colour-Sergeant 13 th Company Q . E . U . V . B ." Does anyone know what the initials stand for?

Pure guesswork: Queen Elizabeth University Volunteer Battalion? Though who the QE would have been I haven't a clue.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

ShaunJ, thanks for the correction - I'd only looked at the transcription not the actual image. That fits - Alexander was born in 1838 so the timing is right.

I found the actual book in Google Books and there are references to Alexander:
"Another familiar name in the shooting annls is that of Sergeat A. Lamont of No 13 Company. Sergeant Lamont is one of its oldest members and has taken a place in a very large number of competitions ...

Amazing what you can find on the internet :-)
