Parish records for Exeter Devon
« on: Monday 14 August 17 11:24 BST (UK) »
Are the parish records for Exeter available on line, or on CD Rom,  anywhere please ? I am looking for a marriage in 1854 but the name William Skinner is a common one and I am reluctant to send for a marriage certificate as it could easily be the wrong one.
Thanking you
Jenn

I'm not sure if this helps but  https://familysearch.org/search  gives the bride as Mary Ann Hawkings.

Are you certain that he married in the parish church? Register Office marriages are not available on line.

There are, or have been, 27 parishes with the City of Exeter.
Do you know which particular parish you are looking for?

I think that all the Exeter Parishes (as well as most of Devon) are now on FindMyPast?

William Henry Skinner was born around 1832 and spent most of his adult life in Commercial Road Exeter.  He was a bricklayer and later a master builder.  That would possibly be St Thomas,  St Edmunds, or Mary Arches church.   His wife had the first names of Mary Ann so it could be Mary Ann  Hawkins.

If they had children and registered the births you can use the new search facility on GRO to confirm the maiden name of the mother.

The FreeBMD entry for the 1854 marriage lists him as William Skinner; not William Henry.

Did your William have a daughter Alice Beatrice, born 1873/4?

Using the new GRO search facility; her mother's maiden name is shown as HAWKINGS.

Thank you everyone.  Yes, they did have a daughter called Alice Beatrice born in 1873 so that tends to confirm that I have the correct marriage.  I had no idea that you could use the GRO facility to locate the maiden name of the mother.

Thank you so much for all the help
Jenn

It's a fairly recent facility;  you need to register but is free. You can now also see the age on death registrations but sadly months often shown as years.  I have a 9 month old showing just as 9.
