Prisoner of War records on Geanologist Web Site
« on: Monday 14 August 17 11:36 BST (UK) »
I'm currently research a Tom Brown from The Essex Regiment.

I know he was a prisoner of war, as I have a copy of the letter sent by the regiment on his release.  His records like many others are missing but from his medal cards I know he was in France in 1916.

He wasn't an officer, so would they have information on him?

Thanks

Unfortunately without a service record you are unlikely to find when he was captured. The index cards as given to the Red Cross only give basic details, name, rank & number.
The war diary will give a day by day account of his Battalion which will (should) give accounts of men missing during operations although highly unlikely to mention anyone by name other than Officers.

The 'Index Cards' themselves do not record the date of capture. However, if you are lucky there will be a reference number on the card (starting with PA often) which allows you to access more detailed information.

What was his service number?

Thomas Brown, no. 12510, b. 17 Jan 1889 Tilbury, L/Cpl in the Essex Reg. was captured at Cambrai on 30 Nov 1917.
