Your family tree online
« on: Monday 14 August 17 15:03 BST (UK) »
Hello,
When I was teaching myself web development I practised various things by creating my parents a website each with the family tree info for their side of the family.
It included information, certificates, pictures, dates - I have blog pages of updates from research I had done, where I was at with each person, if I was stuck on anyone, why etc.

As my parents don't live locally any more, nor do the rest of my family I made this for them for a Christmas present. I made it secure and passworded it so they could give the password to other family members to view the research I had found out.

I was wondering if anyone else has done this or anything similar?

I think in the day and age we are in now it is a brilliant way to keep in touch with family members and keep up to date on any new information, pictures, stories etc.

:)

Sounds marvellous Rachael, and i bet your parents/family are delighted with it, but it also sounds quite intricate and I doubt that I would have the skills.
Great idea though, and I am sure it is one others will take up.

Thanks,
Yeah it was something that they were impressed to see and it did help me with my learning.
Although there were a lot more 'frills' than need be as, like I say, I was playing around with coding and seeing what did what etc.
I am working on a simpler template design to maybe offer a few different packages, as I have had a couple of people who are casually in to genealogy who would be interested in me doing this for them so they can share it with their family, and it just got me wondering if anyone else did that or offered that. Not the actually research but the uploading it all to a website etc.

Cheers

I can imagine there are people who would be prepared to pay for such a service.
You might check out the magazines to see if people are already doing it?
Good luck.

I think it's an excellent way to keep in touch and updated with family, especially if it's a very extended tree.

Wasn't there a young woman on here recently, hoping to make a living from researching families? Most suggested she would need an UPS to make her offers outstanding - something like that could be a way.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland .
