I can't find birth or death records for either party. I know the births predate the start of the Civil Index, but am frustrated re the deaths. Thomas appears to have been alive on 24 Feb 1892 (marriage of his son Michael), but dead on 4 May 1896 (marriage of his son Joseph Patrick). It's possible his birth name was 'John' & there is a missing death record for a John Barrett, died 1893, aged 39 - but he seems too young. There was a Mary Barrett, widow age 48, taken from the Liffey on 21 June 1893 - Inquest held 23 June 1893. Would there be any record of the Inquest?
Any other suggestions or leads?

There is an article in the Dublin Daily Express of 26 June 1893 about the inquest of a Mary Barrett.

However she was apparantly 52 and of Young's Cottages, off Newfoundland St. She fell into the Liffey whilst seeing her daughter off to Glasgow and struck her head on the ship's propellors.

2 clues -- she had a son Michael Barrett who gave evidence -- and a son in law Thomas Ellis.

Marriage (1892) for Michael Barrett doesn't give any indication if his father is death or alive but address is 2 Moncks? Cottages Newfoundland St. which might tie in with death of Mary Barratt in 1893-

Irish ages are definitely 'magical'.

My Irish Gt Grandfather was 56 on the 1901 census -- but when he died in 1903 he was only 51.

Thanks Guys,
The lady who died by falling into the river was my great grandmother, Mary Barrett (nee Gibney).
Re her husband, there is no suggestion of him being dead on the marriage certs of son Michael (24 Feb 1892) or daughter Mary Anne (17 Aug 1891).

Gerard -- you cannot always rely on 'deceased' being shown on a marriage certificate for a father -- particularly way back when. Nowadays I suspect it always will be.
