Help with date of photo maybe Emily Hudson
« on: Tuesday 15 August 17 13:54 BST (UK) »
I was given a photo the other day by my Auntie which was amongst my Grandad's possessions.

As usually seems to be the case with photos I acquire, there is no name or date written on the back so who it is is a bit of a mystery, I have an idea it may be my Great Great Grandmother Emily Hudson who was born in 1858 in Norfolk. I think this photo may possibly be the late 1800's early 1900's making her about 40. Would this be the right sort of time period?

Many thanks

Angela

Can't really help with dating, Angela, except to ask if it's possible for you to post the back of the photo - the type of card and any detail at all on it usually provides extra clues. Meanwhile here's a quick tidy-up before the experts arrive. Cheers, Peter.

Could be very wrong, but I  am throwing my hat into the ring with an 1870s date - possibly early 1870s.

Hope I'm not too wide of the mark.

This is a strange one.
The bodice is typical 1870's, hairstyle not so, also this is an 1890's-Edwardian cabinet card which would make it a copy & an enlargement as cabinet cards were larger than CdeV's.
To avoid rambling I would have to go with her dress style as I can't see any woman wearing this in the 1890's. So a later copy of an 1870's photo.

Would like to note.
If it is a 1890's photo, which opinion I would agree with.

And if she was born in 1858 she is apparently not yet married. ;D
So perhaps not you g g grandmother. EDIT...or perhaps a mature age mother.

Thanks everybody for all your help and for the clean up which is fantastic  :) I have attached a picture of the back however I am not sure if it is original or not.. It looks like my granddad has written a shopping list on the back bless him.. I can't quite make out all the writing but I am pretty sure it is nothing to do with the photo!.
I have got another picture of another relation in a pretty similar dress, I am pretty sure it is not the same person but I have attached it to see what you think. It is so sad when you get photos handed down and no way of knowing who it is 100%.

A bit of a shocker but the pigeon-breast blouse = Edwardian.

Tried to recover a bit of this one but not much better I'm afraid. Cheers, Peter.
