SPRANG Family -- Germany
« on: Tuesday 15 August 17 18:08 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for any information on the SPRANG surname in Germany. All I have for information is Kurt Carl Sprang was born in Germany in 1905. I know he moved to Canada at some point. I do have a passenger list from 1929 for a Kurt Sprang coming to Canada who is listed as being born in Germany in Tilsit. Once in Canada he met and married Frieda Louise Carlton and they had 2 children. I have all the info on Frieda and the children--it's his parents and grandparents etc. that are a blank. He died in 1967 in Edmonton, Alberta. I would love to fill in some blanks on his side of the family. If anybody has any information at all about the SPRANG family it would be greatly appreciated for you to share with me.

The 1929 passenger list (if I am looking at the same one) records that his father was Rektor Sprang, Arndtsrasse 2, Tilsit

There's a mention of a Rektor Sprang on page 14 of this 1962 edition of Das Ostpreussenblatt:

http://archiv.preussische-allgemeine.de/1962/1962_06_23_25.pdf

See para headed "Haushaltsschule Tilsit" in column 2. Greetings sent to Rektor Sprang "who today lives in Erlangen" if my schoolboy German serves me correctly.

This subscription site apparently has a directory listing for a Sprang family in Tilsit in 1919: https://www.ahnen-spuren.de/ostpreussen/adressbucher/tilsit-ragnit/tilsit-stadt-1919/personennamen-tilsit-stadt-1919

Here's another school reference - this one in Gross Friedrichsdorf (25km from Tilsit). A 1927 class photo with Präzentor Sprang.

Well found, Peonie.

Any thoughts on what the "a D" stands for?
Rektor ausser Dienst = retired headmaster (or rector?)
