Thoughts on Deimel & Rundle photo.
« on: Wednesday 16 August 17 04:27 BST (UK) »
The photo I’m posting is taken from a family album of carte de visite photos that range from the 1860s to the late 1880s. It was labelled Deimels and Rundles. I know that it was taken between 1865 and 1875, as that is when the photographer on the back of the photo was working in Adelaide. I also know that my ggg-grandmother Cornelia Deimel had a sister Gesina who married a John Rundle in 1850. I know that the male on the end is Julius Deimel, son of Cornelia, born 1848. The young woman on the other end is my gg-grandmother who was born Maria Anna Catherina Auguste Deimel in 1846.

I’d really appreciate ideas on whether it is likely to be a wedding photo…..if it was a wedding photo then it was either taken in 1867 or 1875.
Ideas on the ages of the others in the photos would be welcome, and in fact anything that you can possibly contribute about it.

Hoping to work out a little more about this "treasure".....

Definitely 1860's & I would suggest early-mid decade. Crinoline's went out of fashion late decade particularly amongst younger women so the upper date may depend on how up to date they were but I wouldn't put it later than 1867.
I'm not convinced this is a wedding photo as they appear to be wearing normal daywear & there's a marked absence of hats which makes this look more casual.
The girl looks about 16/17. Not sure about the chap as from your date this would make him late teens. The lady on the right looks about 6 months pregnant.
Lovely photo & I'm sure we've seen this before.

Oops, Jim, senior's moment!    :-[
Thanks for your response though......and for jogging my memory. I must apologise......I just checked back and I did indeed post this photo over 9 years ago.

I just got excited as I have just discovered that the original timber and slab hut that the Deimels first lived in around 1853 is still standing and has been restored. I've been in contact with the people who have restored it, as well as the 2 roomed stone cottage that was added between 1853 and 1875 and they are keen to have any history of those who lived on the property over the years.

In defiance of Jim's advice  ;D  that it's probably not a wedding party, I've dressed the girls in a desaturated version of the colours in an 1860s painting called "The Reluctant Bride". Isn't it a great picture for showing so much personality in the people. Cheers, Peter.

Thanks Peter.....much appreciated.    :)
I googled "The Reluctant Bride".
RC is a great place to learn new things.       :D

Hmm... reading my post again, I worded it badly. I meant that your photo really showed up the personalities of the people, something that not a lot of old photos do. If you're from Iluka we're practically neighbours - within 3 or so hours anyway. Cheers, Peter.

No, Peter.....more hours apart than that, I think. Iluka means by the sea, and when I joined RC I took the  username deeiluka as I was living by the sea in the south of South Australia. I'm now with family in the Southern Highlands of NSW.    ;)
