Regimental abbreviation
« on: Wednesday 16 August 17 11:41 BST (UK) »
On FindMyPast, I have a baptism for James and William McGraw, 1817, Woolwich, after their fathers name it has G.R.A.W.  - is this an abbreviation of his army rank or trade?

I notice it crops up elsewhere in the register. I think it says G.R.A.W.K. and that this probably stands for Gunner Royal Artillery Woolwich Kent. I'm sure others will have an opinion.

It is the way only a civilian would render it, it isn't (pedants corner) a formal army abbreviation, it combines his rank, regiment and station all in one (purists shudder)!

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
