Burials in Leeds
« on: Wednesday 16 August 17 16:24 BST (UK) »
Hello all,
I've had some great help on this site before and am looking for a little more please.
I'm looking for the burial of James Downie who died on29/12/1971 and was probably buried near family at Harehills Cemetery.
I've also drawn a blank looking for the burial place of my gt grandparents....
Sam Airey died 15/12/1943 in Burley,Leeds, and his wife Sarah Airey died 30/11/1950...also in Burley Leeds.I have no clue as to where they may be buried, sorry.
Any help with their final resting places would be much appreciated...as I have rung Lawnswood on a couple of occasions with details but sadly have had no feedback.
Many thanks
Sue

Hi Sue

According to the transcriptions on the Yorkshire Indexers site (http://www.yorkshireindexers.info/forum/forum.php) the Aireys are buried in Armley Cemetery. There are two others in the same grave, also with the surname Airey.

These records are part of a subscription database (the fee is modest), so I feel it is unfair to the site to give you all the details, but the transcriptions include age, occupation, place of death and usual residence. The site also has some gravestone photos; I couldn't see one for this plot, but I don't know whether there isn't a memorial, or they just haven't taken a photo yet.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Thank you Arthurk,
Are you able to see the Christian names at all for the other two Aireys? Am wondering if they may be their 2 unmarried children Fred who died 1935 and Hilda in 1974. No worries if it's not possible.
Finally...is there only one Armley cemetery please?
Thank you for your time

Yes, Fred and Hilda were the ones I found.

I'm sure Brian knows Armley better than I do, but I'd just add from the Yorkshire Indexers information that it's listed as a municipal cemetery rather than a churchyard. Also, it seemed to show up in some searches as Hill Top - unless I'm getting mixed up.

Fred in fact died in the Leeds Workhouse!
123 Beckett Street, later St James Hospital.
Hill Top being correct Arthur.

I had a feeling 123 Beckett St was a workhouse....I can't work out why....the rest of the family all lived close by each other in Burley all their lives. That makes me SOOOOO sad  :( :( :(

Hi Susan,

It appears you didn't get an answer on James Downie's burial. James was buried in Harehills Cemetery, Consecrated  Sect.C2 grave 169, 4th January 1972. He was buried along with 7 unrelated others.

There is also a burial at Harehills for Annie Elizabeth Downie age 61, buried 8th January 1934 Consecrated Sect. Y grave 924. There are also 3 people with the name Targus in the same grave.

There is a photo of James Downie's headstone but no photo for Annie Elizabeth's headstone if there was one.
