John Popplewell
« on: Thursday 17 August 17 05:52 BST (UK) »
I am interested in John Popplewell born about 1801 who according to various censors came from Little Stambridge and I wondered whether anyone can substantiate this. He married Phoebe Cates 16 October 1828 in Southchurch but a search of all the surrounding parish records has failed to find any evidence of him such as his baptism.
Any assistance with this would be very much appreciated.
Ken

Not everyone was baptised? And not everyone was baptised as an infant?

Do you know what religious denomination he was?
Parish records tend to be Anglican.

He may have been born out of the county. Looks like Phoebe was born 1810 in Prittlewell which is very near the marriage place of  Southchurch.

Phoebe was born 20th Nov. 1810 and baptised 9 December 1810 in Prittlewell. They had a son Thomas baptised in Rochford 29 April 1832. From then on I can trace the Popplewell's through to the birth of my mother in the 1920's.
John was a schoolmaster in Rochford for many years and I wonder whether a search of the national school documents held at the Essex Record Office may tell us more about John who lived in the schoolhouse. Has anyone experience in searching through these collections at ERO that can offer advice.

If you're short of Popplewells in the area, there's a burial of a John Popplewell at Southchurch, 8 April 1832, age 66 (or possibly may be 65)
Essex Wills Beneficiaries Index, 1805, mentioned in will of T Coolbear, I think must be Thomas Coolbear of Rochford, are Eliz Popplewell, daughter, and Jn Popplewell, son in law, of Rochford.
