The side by side maps are appreciated.

My Coulson granddad left the UK in the 1920s.
My research has shown that many of his brothers and sisters also moved out of Hebburn soon after ending up in places down south.
Therefore there is only the smallest of chances that the people you knew in the 1960s were relatives of mine.

Saw your post re South Shields, and you being a Kiwi. I thought'She might need some useful information', ... but what Stan and the others have posted, well, I have nothing to add, EXCEPT - Catherine Cookson, born in that area- South Shields- TYNE DOCK-[yes, that is a correct name and will show on maps and web searches].  So, best of luck with your diggin', and as I am from Blyth the proper and correct way to pronounce 'South Shields' ... is ' Sooth Sheils.'
