Can anyone help me find my 5x gt grandparents please
« on: Thursday 17 August 17 17:10 BST (UK) »
I have the death certificate of my 4 x gt grandmother Jean Edgar nee Dickson November 1859 who died in Torthorwald which states her parents as Matthew Dickson and Mary Gass. His occupation seems to be innkeeper and small farmer but the writing is not very good so that is open to interpretation. Jean was married to John Edgar who was a tailor.Would love any info on Jeans parents as can't seem to find anything
Also if there is any info on Johns ( born 1780 in Mouswald ) parents who are Joseph Edgar and Ann Burnet
Many thanks

No help but adding to the mix  :D

Looking at Carole's find with Joan b c 1781 (c1779 on death) & Annette's find Elizabeth 1766 that's a big gap (15+ yrs) for siblings.

I wonder if Elizabeth was the mother with Mathew & Mary being g/parents?

There's also...

Katharine Dickson 09/03/1794
Father Mathew Dickson (mother not on index)
850/10 68
Torthorwald

Another big gap (13+ yrs) from Joan/Jean  :-\

More confusion....

This fits date/place but wrong father (no mother named)  ???

Janet DICKSON Baptism 15 Mar 1778 Torthorwald Parish Register Dumfries
Birth 11 Mar 1778 Father Joseph DICKSON
Register note also at Trabealy burn

Joseph also has;

Betty 1771
Agnes 1774
John 1775
Margaret 1780
Matthew 1781

Just a thought could Joseph have died & Mary (if she was the mother) have remarried to Mathew?

Thanks Annette and Annie
I saw Elizabeth and thought the same as you Annie but wondered if maybe they claimed the child was theirs to save embarrassment for Elizabeth.....I too thought that was a big gap in years...still possible though....haven't added her to the tree yet......
Will have to check on Joseph....
Really hard trying to fit all the pieces together
Many thanks again for the help

There does seem to be a connection somewhere  :-\

May be worth tracking Elizabeth as it would be interesting to know the names of her children?

If Jane/Joan/Jean/Janet was Elizabeth's daughter you would have thought she'd be named for her mother Mary  ???

Sometimes looking too deep causes more confusion  ;D

Not all OPRs were recorded i.e. there's room for Mathew & Mary to have had more children.
