California Death Certificate
« on: Thursday 17 August 17 19:14 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if there is an easier way to locate a CA death certificate on family search, if you know the Name, DOD,  County, and the # from the CA death index?  Do you have to look through the images individually?

"Do you have to look through the images individually?"

No, there are indexes.  Got to 'California, County Birth and Death Records, 1800-1994.'  Click on 'Browse through 2,915,415 images.'  Select the county [or part of a county] of interest  -  e.g., Los Angeles County.  From among the numerous files, choose the Death Index file for the year of interest.  That will give you the certificate number you need to find the death certificate in the files of certificates.

Thank you for that information.  Doesn't seem to help in the case of the person I'm searching.  Will continue to look page by page.

        name:  Sidney Hanson Davis
        dod:  4 Feb 1936
        pod:  Los Angeles County

I looked at the 1936 index and found his name, image 84.  He was listed after Anna Greene Davis, # 1784, and she is located on that death certificate number.  His listing does not give a number, so I figured it was between 1784 and the next #, 1962--Laura Davis.  So far, I've looked through license #1972 , image 1350.

Maybe another set of eyes will help.  Thank you.

Here he is in the 1936 index  -  certificate # 1372.

But it appears that FamilySearch does not have files that cover all of the 1936 death certificates in Los Angeles County.  They just have numbers 1 - 250 and 10,100 - 12,041.  I have run into that problem with LA death certificates; some sequences are just missing.

Here's the hang up.  You found him on page 84 of the deaths registered in the City of Los Angeles but actually he died somewhere in Los Angeles County outside of the city.  So, his data were removed from the registry of city deaths and sent to the county registry.  That's why the entry is marked with an 'R.'  I had this very same problem when looking for an LA death and I got a very helpful explanation of the situation.  I'll see if I can find and link to that old post.

Here's the previous thread about removed LA death certificates:

Here's the link to his DC.

=================

You almost had it. Another little quirk of the their system. The 1936 & 1937 the DC's  were listed by quarters & number. They are not in the order with the rest of the DC's by year.

Look in the far right column just above where the Death indexes start.

Thanks, RJ, for explaining another 'glitch' in the files.  Arggh.  I wish FamilySearch would straighten things out.
