The Scottish Genealogy Society has recently published three books, all for East Lothian: Tynninghame, St Baldred’s Kirk

The early village of Tynninghame was situated on the north bank of the river Tyne, south and west of the now ruined church, in the grounds of Tynninghame House. Up until 1709 the entries in the records refer to the inhabitants of this village. The first mention of New Tynninghame comes with the baptismal entry for William, son to Alexander Dudgeon in New Tynninghame in August 1709. Over the next 50 years the inhabitants moved from the old site to the present village, out of sight of the mansion house. The church was allowed to become a ruin.

The Kirk Session records exist from 1615 to 1761 (CH2/359). From 1615 to 1650 they are the work of one man, Mr John Lauder, Minister of Tynninghame (1610-1662) who wrote a very detailed account of parish life. The baptisms, marriages and burials were recorded as they happened amongst the events of the parish (CH2/359/1). From 1650 the minutes were recorded by the session clerk: baptisms and marriages being entered at the end of each year (CH2/359/2). Registers of baptisms (OPR723) were entered from 1695-1776. Above CH2 references are from the National Records of Scotland.
