Finding a street in 1841 census
« on: Friday 18 August 17 13:37 BST (UK) »
Is there an index available for St George in the East? Trying to find Star St in 1841 & need sub-registration district and enumeration district. It's off the south side of Commercial Road, near Christ Church Watney St.

Star Street, Commercial Road East changed to Planet Street (Stepney Parish) before 1912. (this may help you locate it)  :-\

Is this address is from the 1841 census?

Here is Planet Street:

Maybe just in Shadwell.

Try  HO107/703/4/4/3
Almeroth, Germany (probably Hessen). Mawer, Softley, Johnson, Lancaster, Tatum, Bucknall (E.Yorks, Nfk, Lincs)

Funnily enough I can locate a Star Place in St George in the East, but only a Star Street in Stepney, Parish St Paul, Shadwell 1841 census?

If the above is the correct street, it is not marked on this 1844 map:
http://mapco.net/cross1844/cross13.htm

There are several Star Alleys, Courts and Places.

What is your source for "Star Street"? You seem to know a reasonable amount about it's location - how is that? The one I linked to on the maps is south of Commercial Road and near Watney Street as you specified.

Star Place, Lower Chapman St, St George in the East.
Star Street Shadwell is a continuation of Shakespeare's Walk.

(I can't help with enumeration and sub reg district for any of them)

Star Street is marked here:
http://www.mappalondon.com/london/north-east/rotherhithe.jpg

Click on top left corner and it is the seventh street running south from Commercial Road.
(as you specified it was near Christ Church Watney Street I presume this is the correct Star Street)

Interesting.
I've got the same family living at the same address on Star St in 1851, 1861 and 1871.
They were married from there in 1845.
They baptised several children from there in 1844.
Here's Stanford's map circa 1860 showing the street: http://www.mappalondon.com/london/north-east/rotherhithe.jpg
- two streets to the east from Watney St.

Seems reasonable to expect it to have been there in 1841 if it was there in 1844 & 5.
