Bombardier Patrick Tynan record
« on: Friday 18 August 17 22:46 BST (UK) »
Hi all I am trying to get the service number for Patrick Tynan born in Johnstown co Kilkenny and who was a pre war soldier serving in India from around 1910 and who deployed to Greese I think around 1917. Question did he ever get a medal for India service and what theatres of war did he serve. Thanks

This could be 63540 Bdr Patrick Tynan, joined RFA 1910 and served until 1919.  His record is on the subscription site FindMyPast.  The only war theatre spelled out on his record is service in the Mesopotamia (Iraq) campaign, otherwise India and UK.
His units are spelled out on this record but need some analysis like all RA service records!!  His address after discharged is given as the Austin Works in Longbridge and he has a sister Lizzie in Canad - is this him?

However, there is a separate record for a Patrick born Johnstown Kilkenny, 1886/7, father James, brother James serving in the Royal Garrison Artillery 1902 to 1910 which has the number 63540 scribbled on it which at first sight could be him.  The RFA record has no such link with the earlier record - a bit iffy.

Best you check the family information first, particularly the sister and the Longbridge address and we'll review what we have.

MaxD's Patrick Tynan first appears on the ER's in 1945 living in Lickey Rd. Cofton Hackett just up the road from the Longbridge plant.
Others in the house are Marie & Nora Tynan also a Minnie & James Cordwell. 1950 there's also a Patrick J Tynan.
There's a death registered in nearby Bromsgrove for a Patrick Tynan in 1970 with a BY of 1889 which as MaxD said makes the 1902 man a bit iffy.
Ring any bells ?
Edit:
Are we talking about this Patrick Tynan from the 1922 Military census in Ireland ?

Closer examination of the 1910-1919 record suggests that the 1902-1910 man could well be the same one.

The 1910-19 man has an allowance towards pension of 8 years previous service which would perhaps refer to the RGA service with the colours 1902-1910.

The early record has a note "absent" in 1911 when he should have been on his 4 years reserve service but the connection between the two records was probably made much later.

The discrepancy in birth dates, aged 18 in 1902 and aged 23 in 1910 is a bit off but not unusual?

His MIC makes reference to form 19/T/411 "restoration of service" meaning for whatever reason he forfeited service but had it restored. Any reference to that on his record ?

The early record has a note "absent" in 1911
Could it refer to this ?
Edit:
I think he was born 1883 Urlingford Kilkenny so age is out a bit.
His NOK Cornelius Tynan was born there in 1894.
Johnstown is 4mls. away.

No but significantly, the letter of authority for the addition of the 8 years for pension is dated 1928 and there is another note  referring to the RH Chelsea date 1921 so it looks like a bit of a tussle to get his earlier service recognised.  Main frustration is that the 1910-1919 service is missing the attestation form so there is no record of the declaration of previous service to link with the 02-10 service period.  He has a SWB by the way.

I'm feeling a little more confident that the two records are the same man but would like to hear from the OP about the family info - could you find a sister Lizzie and a younger brother James?

I wonder if his break in service is with regard to service with the 2nd. Div. S. Command in 1922.
I only looked for Cornelius as he was his NOK but I'll look for the others. They are on the 1911 census.
I did see his SWB for sickness.
All in all it's not surprising he had a job getting his previous service recognised.

1901 Johnstown Kilkenny:
James Tynan 60
Mary 50
James 16
Elizabeth 14
+ Cornelius & 3 siblings.
No sign of Patrick which would have clinched it but he could have been working away from home.
There's a Patrick Tynan 16 working for a farmer in Kilkenny but no way of knowing if it's him.
No sign of him in 1911.
