« on: Saturday 19 August 17 06:15 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am just new to this site. I am tring to find the birthplace and parents of my GG GMother Jane Stephenson, born approx 1816, in the Northumberland area, I think?. She married Walter Tate in 1838 at All Saints, Newcastle Upon Tyne, she was 25 he was 40.In the 1841Census they are living at Dog Bank, she was 25 he was 40 and they were shopkeepers.   Then is 1843 she was tried for burglary, sentenced 10yrs and transported to Tasmania. She was on the Emma Eugenia.

Brothers: Edward, William, Robert,
Sisters: Elizabeth and Margaret.

I was try to attach a copy of her Convict Description which gives the place of her birth but I can't decipher it?? Looks like Hufham?? but I know that is not correct

Many thanks for your help.

Pat

Welcome to RChat  :)

I am in New South Wales, and umm .... I am not familiar with UK localities, but I can help with a link to your lass' Tasmania convict record as Jane TAITE ...

http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON41-1-1,188,150,C,100

N. Place is the far right column entry.   I doubt it commences with an H ... (see H in Hazel eyes) and there seems to be ssham as the final five letters.

I wonder if the place is supposed to be Hexham  :-\   Spelling looks like Hessham (with a long second S)  I agree that the H does not look the same as others

I thought Hexham too, Rosie, before I had read your post.

I have checked FreeREG/Familysearch etc for a Jane c 1812-16 with those possible Siblings.

There are too many possibles.

The M/C is a must to establish her Fathers name/occp

Unfortunately the 1838 Marriage is not on-line.

Also although born Hexham she may have not been Baptised there.

Northumberland is a area I am very familiar with although I am in NSW also.

The following brief 1838 marriage announcement has it taking place at Clavering Place Chapel, which was non-conformist(Presbyterian).Unfortunately only the couples names and no other details are given.Perhaps Jane's birth is non-con.

Hi,

To everyone who has sent replies many thanks..you are all so much smarter at this than me!! I have most of her convict reports etc in Tassie but the mystery of who she was before she was transported was baffling me. I have ordered her  MC so hopefully that will also clear up some questions.

Regards

Pat
Also did I post in the correct place or is there another place I should have posted??

Hi Pat,
Its excellent you have ordered the Cert.

As Roger said the Family may be non-conformist and there are several possible Baptisms for her at St Nicholas Parish Reg and Nonconf, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland.

The Cert will help sort it out.

Please once you have it type the details up here including Fathers name/occp and Witnesses names.

You could have posted this query on the Northumberland Board but it is also ok on here.
