Posting it on the beginners board was fine.  ;D  The mods are always happy to move it later if necessary.  As trish says please post the details when you get them.

Just curious, did she stay in Australia or return to England

Hi Rosie,

No she stayed in Tasmania, got her Ticket of Leave married my GG GFather, Charles Woodward, another convict, and so started my paternal line in Tasmania. She had 5 children to him, then he went off, still to explore that, and she remarried again. So in all a very determined and interesting woman.

Asking further expertise... on the Family Tree do I list her will all her four names??

And when I find out where all the different boards are I will post to the correct one.

 Thanks again
Pat

My family tree programme allows me to keep adding marriages to a woman though her surname remains as her 'maiden surname'

The different boards can be found under 'Forum' at the top of this page  ;)

Hello Pat, and welcome from me too.

Do you have the details of Jane's case in Newcastle? A detailed article about it in the Newcastle Courant August 4, 1843. I can type out the article if you'd like (I think attaching a copy might breach copyright?). It doesn't mention her husband or place of birth though.

I know Roger gave you a link to the marriage announcement in reply #6, but just in case you don't have a subscription to findmypast, the marriage announcement in the Newcastle Courant Friday, August 10, 1838:

"the 4th inst. at Clavering Place Chapel, Mr Walter Tate, to Miss Jane Stephenson, both of this town."

(Of course, "of this town" only means that they had been living there for the required time before marriage.)

Just as an aside, Walter was  elected assistant overseer of All Saint's parish in June 1839:

"On Thursday last, a meeting of the rated inhabitants of All Saint's parish was held in the vestry of the church, for the purpose of electing an assistant overseer. The candidates were Mr Walter Tate, Mr Jos Cowell,, Mr Geo Ridley, and Mr Cowens. On a show of hands being taken, a very large majority were in favour of Mr Tate, who was duly elected."
Newcastle Courant Friday, June 21, 1839

Though it appears he resigned the position before 4 Sept 1840 when William WILSON advertised that he was standing for the position. (Newcastle Courant,  Friday, September 4, 1840)
