Adoption?
« on: Saturday 19 August 17 10:28 BST (UK) »
Was wondering if some one could point me in the right direction.
My late grandad was adopted by his auntie (only found out when he died and he didn't tell anyone).
Where do I go to find more information on the adoption as doesnt look like its proper adoption going through the right channel?
The area was St Mary's Cray.

Hi

You've discounted the informal/family adoption?

Legal adoption didn't come in until 1926 (England/Wales. Scotland separately).

The papers I have are dated 1925. Just don't know where to start?

What "papers" do you have?
Issued by whom?
Signed by whom?
etc

Did his aunt change his name?
"New" birth certificate?
Original birth certificate?

I have "An Agreement" between his birth mother Ethel Coppard of Bromley Institution Farnborough Kent  and " the adopter" Ernest Solomon in 1925.
I also have a copy of his birth certificate:
John Coppard b31/12/1913 St Pauls Cray. Mother was Ethel Coppard formerly Weedon.
His fathers forename was crossed out but seen as Frederick. But I have found out who his birth parents were.
Just wanted to find out why and any actual documents I can apply for etc..
Obviously he was known as John Solomon.
When I delved into it more, that's when I found out his auntie Hettie adopted him which was Ethel's sister.

There's almost certainly no other documentation than what you have.  You are lucky to have that; pre-1927 there were no formalities required for adoption at all.

Was Aunt Hettie married to Ernest Solomon?

So John was 11 or 12 when the "Agreement" was made in 1925?  Do you know anything of Ethel's circumstances at the time?  (Probably difficult circumstances given that she was in the Bromley Institution).

If Frederick's details are crossed out on the birth certificate (v unusual) is there a chance that Frederick was not his natural father and rejected him?
