It's such a huge shame there are no other papers about the adoption :'(

This post has been amended ( on more than one occassion )
in order to copy in various posts from another website

On other website from JANUARY 2013

Ethel Harriet Coppard (Weeden/Weedon was her maiden name).
B Mar 1885 and married Frederick Henry Coppard 1909 Bromley.

Details from WhoDoYouThinkYouAre magazine . . . . .
http://www.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com/forum/topic8983.html

"Anyway, I have found Ethel in the 1911 census - living with her parents and siblings at No.5 Meadow View, St Paul's Cray, Kent.  She is shown as married for 1 year and has had 2 children both of whom have died.  There is no indication of the whereabouts of her husband.  Knowing his occupation may give a clue as to why he is not with his wife - unless of course he has deserted her.  Persons resident in the household are:
Mary Susan Weeden 55 (shown as head) m. 37 yrs, 10 children of whom 8 are living
Joseph Weeden    66
Ethel Coppard    27
Daniel Richard Weeden    24
Arthur Edward Weeden    21
Horace Edward Weeden    15
Voliet Horance Weeden    10
"

"found two births of sons on FreeBMD who probably had Ethel as their mother:
Births Mar 1914  COPPARD    John    Weeden    Bromley    2a   1118
Births Jun 1918  Coppard    Horace    Weedon    Bromley    2a   863
and am guessing that John would probably be your grandfather.

Again I wonder if you have his birth certificate as this will show what his father was doing at the time.  It could also be useful to have the birth certificate of his younger brother.

As to more information about the "Bromley Institution" - I am pretty sure that this was the Bromley Workhouse; http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Bromley/ - the Workhouses site says, among other things, that the Farnborough Hospital now occupies the former Bromley workhouse site.  The records are held at Bromley Local Studies library and the link is found on the page URL shown above.

Yes they had twin boys soonish after the Sep qtr 1909 marriage:

Frederick b Jun qtr 1910 Bromley d Jun qtr 1910 Bromley
John b Jun qtr 1910 Bromley d Mar qtr 1911 Bromley

Perhaps the fledgling marriage did not survive these sad events, and the later John was fathered by someone else?

Another son?

Horace Coppard mmn Weedon, Jun qtr 1918 Bromley.

I would suggest you ask the National Archives to quote you for providing the divorce file and (if affordable) get that.  It's the best chance you have of finding out what went on in the marriage.

Reply #13 keeps being amended.   No problem with that but you can't reasonably take a point against people for posting stuff which wasn't originally in an earlier reply.
