Sorry the Hathway family again
« on: Saturday 19 August 17 15:03 BST (UK) »
I am in a muddle, have 2 problems.
First

Edwin Hathway born 1817 Winterbourne, married Eliza Harrison in 1852.
They had 5 children
Edwin born 1856
Robert 1858-1931
John 1860-1860
Jane Harriet born 1861
Helen born 1862,
Its the 2 girls I am having problems with.
Found the birth reg for Jane Harriet on GRO records no sign of her afterwards on ancestry.
Found no birth reg for Helen on the GRO site but she is living with her parents on the 1871 census also I have a baptism for her.  Is it possible that the family called Jane Helen?

Second
Going back to Helen, in 1890 she married John Stewart Butt. John is a widower with a daughter Elsie May 1888-1892. Again according to the GRO site Elsie's mother's surname is Biscoe. Found a marriage in 1885 Cirencester between a Sarah Biscoe and James Butt. Again could John be James?

Any help would be appreciated

Failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874/75.  Have you done a search on the Gro site for Hathaway births with mmn Harrison around that time

Have you checked freebmd for a Sarah Butt death?

Re John or James - you may need to compare fathers details on the earlier marriage cert with the 1890 cert

Thanks Carol, Yes I have researched all different names etc on the GRO site. There are several deaths for a Sarah Butt on FreeBMD.

Re Jane and Helen: you know "Jane"'s birth was registered Sep qtr 1861 and "Helen" was baptised 11 May 1862 and was 9 by the time of the census on 2 April 1871.  There might just about (technically) have been time for these to be separate sibling births but it seems most unlikely, especially as there is no death reg for Jane or birth reg for Helen.

Much more likely is that they are one and the same person, and the parents had changed their minds on the name after her birth had been registered.

not sure you have the right Elsie Butt

James Stewart Butt & Sarah Biscoe marry in Ashleworth

1891 - Cirencester

James Butt    50 - b Cirencester, nailer & jobbing gardener
Sarah Butt    42 - b Eldersfield, Worcester
James G Butt    4 - b Ashleworth
Elsie M Butt    2 - b Cirencester  [Elsie on Ancestry transcription]
Mary Ann Dana    40 - visitor
Frank Dana    2 - visitor
Alfred Danes    10/12 - visitor

RG12,  2032, 30, 22

There's an Elsie Ida Hathway, no mmn b Barton Regis in 1888

there's a John Butt b Saul, Gloucestershire on a vessel in Tideham on the 1891 census - possible?
