The witnesses on a lot of my marriages turned out to be provided by the church. Have you checked to see if he appears on other marriage records around the time? If his name appears a lot, he might not be connected to the family at all.

I've also had slightly further relations be witnesses such as brother in law... It might be a family name but not her family name.
