John Nuttall/Nuttle died Wolverhampton 1851

I'm trying - without success - to find the GRO reference for the death certificate of John Nuttall (or Nuttle) who was buried in Wolverhampton on 1st February 1851.

I've found him in the burial register of St Peter's church (where his name is spelled Nuttal), but for the life of me can't find him in the GRO indices.

Can any kind soul with sharper eyes/brain than mine help?

Although Civil Registration was introduced in 1837 it only became compulsory to register births, marriages and deaths in 1874 so it is very possible the death was not registered.

I doubt very much whether the family would have had the money to pay for an obituary, but it's certainly worth looking for.  If it was an accidental death, the inquest doesn't appear to have been reported in the papers (I've checked Jane Smith's book "Accidents"); and the coroner's reports don't exist for that far back.

If a coroner was involved I think he then issues the death certificate.  Maybe the copy records just did not reach the GRO

Either that or he's mistranscribed: I can see me having a fun day reading through the microfiche index at the local Archive, or throwing myself on the mercy of the Local Superintendant Registrar...
