missing from census forms Joseph Dunbar born 1875
« on: Sunday 20 August 17 15:09 BST (UK) »
Searching for Joseph Dunbar, born 1875 Birkenhead, baptised Liverpool 1878. Parents were Alexander and Margaret Dunbar. Joseph does not appear on any census forms, his father was a mariner and never at home, and his mother was living alone as a lodger in 1881. I also cannot see a  death record for him. Possible he either left for the States like his brother Daniel or joined merchant navy, but not found any records yet

Birkenhead was in Cheshire, rather than Lancashire :-\

Have you searched on FreeBMD or CheshireBMD for a death?

Baptism was on 8 October 1875, at Holy Trinity, Birkenhead, Cheshire
Joseph son of Alexander and Margaret Dunbar

Is this his marriage?

CheshireBMD show that he married Mary Jane Roberts - Civil marriage or Registrar attended.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

GRO Index search shows mother's maiden name as Dunbar.

There is also a birth for an Alexander Dunbar, mmn Dunbar 1881, September qtr Liverpool.
Unfortunately he dies in the same quarter.

Could Margaret be in the Infirmary for the census?

I think that is a different person  :-\

The 1901 Census shows a Joseph Dunbar born Birkenhead with wife Mary Jane and three step-children named Roberts. But his birth date is 1861  :-\  RG 13 / 3390 / 175 / 5

Thanks for the searches, the marriage to a Mary Roberts was his uncle also called Joseph Dunbar born 1861 Birkenhead. The merchant record with the photo looks like a good match, I saw this a while ago, but need more evidence this is him. Joseph and his brothers were all born in Birkenhead but they all moved to Liverpool.

The 1881 census for Prince's Walk is definitely his mother and siblings.
