I have really looked at the original photo and I'm convinced it is not scribble, you can see the mesh markings. Anyway here are my versions,

Re the lace hair accessory. In this crop from the OP, I have indicated detail that would have been almost impossible for a darkroom expert (1950's?), let alone with a pencil. Stephen, if you Google 1950's lace hair accessories you will see a myriad of similar items. Sadly, I am old enough to even remember them.  ;D

I agree with Pat, Gadget and Andy (Edit: and Saddles - sorry) that there is a hairnet in the photo. I think the lady has pushed it back off her face and hair for the photo. I remember my (maternal) grandma would rarely go out without one “to keep my hair in place” and “wouldn’t be seen dead without one” on any formal occasions.  Sometimes they came with a hat, sometimes not. They usually encased the hair and came to depths varying from just above the eyes down to those designed to cover the whole face. A practical item had morphed into a fashion accessory. Today it reminds me of Ena Sharples (if you don’t know, google her) - hers definitely wasn’t a fashion accessory.  ;D
