Baylis(s) /Fortescue
« on: Monday 21 August 17 12:51 BST (UK) »
My grandfather Charles Thomas Bayliss inherited a family plate of the Fortescue family.
The image of the crest on the plate is of a heraldic tiger supporting with his right forepaw
a plain silver shield. Surrounding this is the Fortescue motto - Forte Scutum Salus Ducum.
I would be interested to hear from anyone who may have any knowledge of a connection
between the two families.

I do not know of anything, but are (as are most Rootschatters) more than willing to help you research yourself to see if any connection can be found.
To do that, we need some more info - do you know when approx. the plate was inherited? And from whom?  And re your grandfather - assuming he is now deceased, (if still alive do not give any details) - when and where was he born? Do you know his father's name? His mum's name and maiden name? What else do you know about his wider family?

There is information about the various crests used atop the coat-of-arms for the Fortescue family, here:
http://fortescue.org/site/heraldry/

The Family Tree page on that website shows an Ann Taft Bayliss (b1838) who married a George Thackray (1834-1911), but I can't see a link to the Fortescue family?

It was common for different branches of the family to use the same shield, but to change the crest.

To all who kindly replied to my earlier (2015 ) post regarding the Bayliss family.
Please accept my sincere apologies for not acknowledging your responses.
Unfortunately family circumstances meant that my family history research had to suddenly
come to a full stop.  However I am back and promise to do better this time !!
Thanks again  Jill

Good morning
I am member pathar505 and I have been asked by my friend jilldmorris to respond to all who have replied and offered good advice regarding her recent query. She says : Thank you to everyone for their replies and help. Unfortunately I am unable to reply personally due to family health problems and I have again had to put aside my family history for the time being. Hopefully I will be able to continue my research when circumstances change.
Regards to all
