Birth of Ellen Evans in Swansea West Glamorgan
« on: Tuesday 22 August 17 08:14 BST (UK) »
I am unable to trace the birth of my paternal grandmother Ellen Evans -  DOB approx 1877

Parents - Father - David Evans - DOB approx 1840
Mother - Mary Hughes (widow) formerly Roberts  DOB approx 1836
              Marriage registered 22/6/1868.

Ellen's christian name has a few variations - Elinor, Eleanor.

I have found her marriage in 1899 to Morgan Williams and thereafter she is listed on the 1901/1911
census and the 1939 register.

Any help with my search would be greatly appreciated - many thanks Anne Lewis

The GRO index now show the maiden name on births; you would need to look for an Evans birth with maiden name of Roberts.

It is free to register.   https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

Do you have Ellen/Elinor on the 1881 census?

Is this your David and Mary Evans, married Jun Qtr 1868, Swansea?

1871 Census RG10  5445  10  1481
David Evans, Head, 31, House Joiner, b. Llandilo, Carm.
Mary Evans, Wife, 35, b.Llangyfelach

John Hughes, step son, 12, b. Llangyfelach
Margaret Evans**, dau, 2, b. Llangyfelach
Address Brynyfrydd, Llangyfelach

** GRO birth registration, Margaret Ann Evans, Jun Qtr, 1869, mother's maiden name Roberts

1881 RG11  5352  26  46
David Evans, Head, 41, Carpenter & Grocer, b. Llanddebia, Carm.
Mary Evans, Wife, 45, b. Llangyfelach
Margaret Evans, dau, 12, b. Llangyfelach
Elizabeth Evans**, dau, 8, b. Llangyfelach
Sarah Evans**, dau, 10, b. Llangyfelach

Mary Jane Howell, dau, 24, wife (to potter in spelter works), b. Llangyfelach
Margaret Edith Howell, dau, 2, b. llangyfelach
Address - 15 Pentreharn Hill

I can find GRO birth registrations for Elizabeth (Jun Qtr 1873) and Sarah (Jun Qtr 1871) - mother Roberts

No sign of an Ellen Evans, born about 1878, either on GRO or the above '81 Census.

On the 1901 Census Ellen Williams, wife of Morgan, has place of birth "Cockett".

If you have her marriage cert what was Ellen's father's name and occupation?

Is this Morgan and Ellen/Eleanor in 1911?

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWXK-9SW

If so then I think this is likely to be Elinor, mother Mary and siblings in 1881:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2W9-JLND

Her birth registration:

EVANS, ELLEN
Mother's maiden surname: EMMANUEL
GRO Reference: 1877  D Quarter in SWANSEA  Volume 11A  Page 668

I can see the other EVANS children's births as well as Rachel THOMAS with mother's name as various versions of EMANUEL.

1871 (father is David EVAN/S)

Mary MANUEL/EMANUEL with first husband Howell THOMAS.  I think that Mary Jane and Sarah's ages and order of birth are correct here in 1861 and wrong in 1871.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M74B-4SK

Marriages Sep quarter 1855

MANUEL    Mary
STANBURY    Joseph
THOMAS    Howell
Thomas    Mary

Swansea    11a   642

A wild guess for the second marriage but the names are so common only Mary's father's details from the cert would confirm:

Marriages June quarter 1868

Evans    David
Phillips    John
Thomas    Mary
Williams    Sarah

Swansea    11a   795

I had checked the GRO for Ellen Evans, Swansea around 1877/1878 - 3 came up with mother's maiden names Manwell (1876), Emmanuel (1877) and Beynon (1879).

There was also the baptism of an Ellen Louisa Evans, born 3 Dec 1877, bap 5 June 1878, mother Ellen Evans (no father), abode Swansea - place St. Mary's Church. However, this must be Louisa Ellen Evans, birth registered Mar Qtr 1878, Swansea, no mother's maiden name.

Elinor is with her mother, now a widow,in the household of her elder sister Rachel in 1891 - still in the St. John's area.

Hopefully, the marriage cert. and father's name/occupation can help resolve the issue.
