The above is shown on the electoral rolls for 1929-1938 and as Maria G Thorpe at 1939, so I'm guessing her surname was originally Gavrilovna.

Please read reply #4 again- it's just as likely that Gavrilovna is not her surname.

Thank you for your help.

If Harry married abroad and recorded the marriage with a British Consulate, the entry should be found in the GRO overseas marriages, searchable on FindMyPast, but there isn't an obvious entry.

Even now though, it is not a legal requirement to register such events with the consulate.

So he could have married abroad and there be no trace in the 'English' system.

Have you got or applied for Harry's will or the 1954 death cert for her (potentially)

During the Revolution, and afterwards, many Russians went to other countries such as France so even if the bride was Russian their marriage might not have taken place there.

I haven't applied for the Will as he was a distant relation and so I guess the thing will have to remain a mystery for the time being.
Thanks for all your help.

Ivy Ellen is living with Harry K Thorpe in 1945 in Lewisham and stays at that address until the mid 1960s

Not quite! Her last appearance at 291a Queens Road was in 1962
In 1963 it could well be the same Ivy Ellen Thorpe appearing for the first time at 13 Hutchinson House SE14

A death in Southwark, June qtr 1968, Ivy E. Thorpe, age 60
Probate for her, died 20 April 1968. Of 13 Hutchinson House New Cross

There is a death for Marie G Thorpe q2 1954 Ealing but birth recorded as 1893.

Marie was on the 1925 electoral register, 1924 the relevant part may be missing on ancestry, 1923 already mentioned by Mabel, so she should have reached 30 circa 1924/5, there's only a slight difference in her age.
June 1954 Ealing 5e 7
Thorpe, Marie Gavrilovna
age 61
