Where is a death registration for someone killed in WW1?
« on: Wednesday 23 August 17 13:06 BST (UK) »
I feel silly asking this, because I should know the answer! I have the death certificate for a great-uncle who was killed in 1918 but I think a (now deceased) relative obtained the certificate. I have a vague memory that there may have been GRO armed services deaths' records in a book at the Family Records Centre in London, though presumably that would have been moved to Kew. However, I have no idea where to search online for such a death registration, nor how to send for his death certificate (if I wanted to do this now) . There are various records in ancestry about great-uncle but I cannot see a death registration for him.
Can anyone help, please?

Armed Forces BMDs are on FindMyPast and you can use the details to order a certificate from GRO in the usual way.

Hope that helps

Army War Deaths are listed separately in the 'Miscellaneous' indexes, at the end of a full set of GRO indexes. The amount of information, though, is less than on a normal certificate. They are available through the GRO just like any other certificates. However, usually the Cause of Death is just Killed or Missing in action and the place of death is France; Belgium;Italy etc.

Thank you.

I have just checked his certificate: "Killed in Action".

Hi Joy

You have choices with FindMyPast

The generic death index can be searched here

http://search.findmypast.co.uk/search-united-kingdom-records-in-birth-marriage-death-and-parish-records/and_deaths-and-burials

which should pick up all deaths for a particular name

If not or there are too many results try here

https://search.findmypast.co.uk/search-world-Records/british-nationals-armed-forces-deaths-1796-2005

or scroll down here

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01kkp/

to life events BMD's and look for all the GRO data sets towards the bottom of the alphabetical list

No, thank you. I know approximately where he died. His name is on the Ploegsteert Memorial which I have visited, and my great-grandmother had a letter from his commanding officer.
