15th Scottish Light Infantry WW1
« on: Wednesday 23 August 17 13:37 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the war record of James Dargavel Copland.  I believe he was in the Scottish Light Infantry 15th in W.W.1.  I am wanting to find out his rank and the date of enlisting and date of finishing in the Army.
Also I would be. interested to know where I can find a photograph of the uniform he would have worn.
Will his war record show what battles he was in and what countries in which he served?  Any help would be much appreciated.

It looks as if Karen has found the only record that still survives (70% or so of service records were lost in bombing in WW2).

It is his medal record which tells us he served overseas with not only 15th Battalion Highland Light Infantry but also (and the record doesn't tell us when) 8th York and Lancaster and 12th, 17th and 2nd Battalions HLI.  We can tell also that he first served overseas after the end of 1915.  Sadly that is all that can be squeezed out of a medal record.

Thanks MaxD. Very helpful. Shame I haven't been able to find a date for when he finished in the Army.  Still hoping to find information and perhaps, drawing/photo of the uniform that he would have worn.  Thanks again

Ignoring his time with the York and Lancaster which was an attachment rather than a posting (ie a temporary thing) he would have worn the uniform of the HLI throughout.  Google 15th HLI (on images) and there are a number of pictures annotated with the battalion number.

Also, he served with 17th Battalion at some period, here is a book you can read on line (click the pages to turn them) https://archive.org/details/17thHLI00glasuoft

While we don't know when he served in which battalion, you could skim through the outline of wat they all did in the Great War here http://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/army/regiments-and-corps/the-british-infantry-regiments-of-1914-1918/highland-light-infantry/
